Jerrod Murray identifies as a person in long-term recovery from alcohol and drugs since October 19, 2012. Jerrod is the founder and current Executive Director of Painted Horse Recovery, a Culturally specific Native American non-profit organization. Painted Horse Recovery is the first of its kind in the United States.

Jerrod Murray graduated from PCC with an associates degree in applied science. Jerrod was a member of the Native Nations Club and helped organize many events. The PCC Native Nations Club supports intertribal Native American/ Alaskan Native students attending PCC. Jerrod received an Alcohol and drug counseling certificate and completed his internship at Cascadia Behavioral Health Care.

Jerrod is a proud father of four. He contributes in the Native American recovery circles with a culturally specific approach. Jerrod was instrumental in bringing Wellbriety meetings to Portland Oregon.

Kathie Archambault is Northern Cheyenne, Shawnee, Irish and Dutch. She has been in long term recovery from alcohol and drugs since June of 1983. Kathie was not raised on the reservation, although she has lived on the reservation. She worked in the drug and alcohol treatment field in the Portland area. She has assisted in culturally specific events within the alcohol and drug treatment field as well in the community. Kathie has served as an elder to a couple of different ceremonies. She holds an Associate degree in applied science earned through PCC. Kathie has since retired in 2019, and is still advocating for Native American peoples rights and ceremonies. Kathie is a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. Kathie offers the belief in hope and faith. Kathie says, ” Hope in recovery from drugs and alcohol addiction. Hope in maintaining one’s mental illnesses. Faith in our Creator that all things are possible, if we are willing to do the work.”

Jim is an enrolled citizen of the Seneca-Cayuga Nation of Oklahoma, currently residing in Salem, OR. He has been in long-term recovery since 1991. He is a peer supporter and a peer with lived experience in addiction and mental health challenges. In 2015, he began his peer support journey working as a peer support specialist at a community mental health center in rural northeastern Oklahoma. It was there that he got in touch with his roots as a Native person in recovery and it was there that he found himself. He also had a vision of Indigenizing behavioral health and substance use treatment in working with Native peers. In his experience, getting connected to culture and learning language has been the single most healing component of his recovery journey. In his work with Native peers he shares that experience, and encourages them to learn who they are by learning their own cultures and languages.

Lydell Suppah is a Native Oregonian who has been in active recovery since Jan 20th 2016. He is an enrolled Member of the CTWS.Lydell comes from the Big River Bands of the Warm Springs Tribe (Tyx, Tux Pash, Rock Creek). He grew up in Seekseequa Valley on the Metolius Bench of the Warm Springs Indian Reservation. He is also Umpqua, Rogue River from his paternal family, and Nakota and Lakota from his Mother’s family.

Lydell was raised by his Great Aunt, Grandmother and Great Great Grandmother. He was brought up in a loving traditional family full of happiness and traditional values. He was taught the history of his people from a young age. He grew up surrounded by his culture and to respect the world around him. Although Most of the Elders in his life have passed on he stays close to the precious ones that remain. He visits avidly with His Aunt Cheryl, his grandmother Pat and both his paternal and maternal Grandfathers. He believes the Elders hold the key to our survival as a people.

His Auntie Arlita Rhoan made sure he was a student of the Sahaptin Language from a young age. He holds her tutelage and teachings dear to his heart. He learned Horsemanship from His Grandfather Delson Suppah. He learned how to fish from his Maternal Grandfather Buzz Nelson, and How to hunt from his father Roman.

Now having chosen a life in recovery and returning to his cultural values he spends his time sharing his heart with the people in the Native Community in Portland where he resides with his wonderful partner Dustin. He also continues to support Mona Smith Cochrans Equine Therapy Program in Warm Springs. And is a Member of the Center for Tribal Nations Advisory Committee for the newly proposed Indigenous Building along the Willamette. He stays steadfast as a supporter of Culture & Language Immersion as a way of recovery. Lydell believes “we never stop learning. We are students for the whole of our lives.”
